Welcome to the SIO-A Lab

We are nerds working on signal processing, machine learning, wave propagation, ocean acoustics, oceanography and marine biology. We use sound to understand the ocean - on computers, in the lab, and at sea.

We sail on research vessels, fishing boats or tourist charters, chasing data wherever it takes us. We dive into books, which we (sometimes) read cover to cover. We burn through pens and paper re-deriving classical results, and more esoteric ones. Some of us are fluent in MATLAB or Python, others prefer R, Echoview or Raven. We all spend countless hours on the computer, crunching acoustic data, running propagation models or inversion codes.

We ask bold questions and work hard to solve them. We embrace the grind, from debugging code to long nights at sea. We strive for rigor and depth in everything we do. We make it work because we share, question, and build together. We like our work so we have fun.
